“In online trading, cyber security is the lifeblood of the business” Manuel Kälin, Deputy Managing Director

LUMA BEEF AG is a Swiss online butcher's shop based in Neuhausen (SH). Meat lovers get the best cuts from all over the world here: sustainable, hand-picked and from excellent producers. Manuel Kälin is the operations manager and part of the management team and spoke to us about the importance of cyber security and the cyber security assessment carried out by BORTOLI.

What is the difference between a traditional butcher shop and an online butcher shop?

Of course, everything is a little different with an online butcher's shop. As an online shop, we have very little physical contact with our customers. This means that we have to answer all the questions that customers would otherwise ask at the counter as best as possible with our online presence. This is very important for an online butcher's shop to be able to function at all.

How is LUMA equipped in terms of cyber security?

In online retail, cyber security is the lifeblood of the business. That's why our employees are probably a little more aware of the issue than in other companies. If our online shop or our backend were to fail, we would obviously have a big problem. That's why we have been conducting training courses for employees for years, in which we demonstrate examples of simple cyber attacks.

What was the collaboration with BORTOLI like?

We carried out an assessment together. Our goal was to identify whether we still had weaknesses in IT security and, if so, what they were. We received some good advice in this regard. We particularly liked the communication with BORTOLI – Roberto is always cheerful and very personable. He also gave our management a very good debriefing.

As an online shop, IT security is particularly important. What consequences could a hacker attack have for LUMA?

That depends a bit on what kind of attack it is. But in short: If the online shop is not there, our customers cannot shop. Then everything that is processed through our shop would be completely paralyzed. That is an unpleasant scenario that we do not want to imagine.

The term cyber security is on everyone's lips. What does it mean to you?

I grew up with this topic and therefore have a strong awareness of it. It is simply part of everyday life - I protect all my devices and give it the necessary thought. The gap is more apparent in generations that did not grow up with it. Cyber security is an important area that will continue to accompany us, whether at home or at work. You just have to stay on the ball and keep up with developments.

Would you like to say anything in conclusion?

In principle, the collaboration with BORTOLI could be expanded. When it comes to IT security, there is always something to do. The work is not done after an assessment. Even after that, you should keep at it and do your best to protect the company. As a company, you have to decide how much you can and want to invest in this area.
